Travel expert Becky reveals the story behind her career in travel. Whisked away as a child to the tropical riches of Malaysia, the food, history, architecture and landscapes captured her imagination. It was then she decided she wanted to travel for the rest of her life and pursue a career in the industry. Here she shares her life-changing\u00a0experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2005 my parents decided to cancel Christmas. We<\/span><\/span> were going to Malaysia instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was never going to be an orthodox festive period. M<\/span><\/span>y sisters<\/span><\/span> and I<\/span><\/span> were in slight shock as all we<\/span><\/span>‘d ever<\/span><\/span>\u00a0kn<\/span><\/span>o<\/span><\/span>w<\/span><\/span>n<\/span><\/span> were the bracing but snug Christmases in Scotland, our home. Walking out <\/span><\/span>of <\/span><\/span>the airplane in Kuala Lumpur<\/a> (locally called \u2018KL\u2019)<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> the wall of heat and exotic smells were like nothing I\u2019d experienced before.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I remember sampling the most varied and delicious food. Little India in <\/span><\/span>KL <\/span><\/span>had amazing curry, I ate Chinese dumplings in Chinatown and the traditional Malay<\/span><\/span> cuisine<\/span><\/span> was delicious. Each region ha<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> its own speciality. The Dim Sum in Penang<\/a> for example <\/span><\/span>wa<\/span><\/span>s incredible. The indigenous Orang Asli in Taman Negara National Park<\/a> offered<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>us <\/span><\/span>steamed fish cooked inside bamboo and it was simple but absolutely delicious.<\/span><\/span> The variety was mind boggling and the trip was <\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span>true culinary journey of a lifetime.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The backdrop to these foodie<\/span><\/span> delights w<\/span><\/span>as<\/span><\/span> equally inspiring. From the iconic Petronas towers<\/a>, the glistening <\/span><\/span>domed mosques, the Chinese buildings, the British colonial architecture to the wooden Kampong shacks in the jungle, the story behind each fa\u00e7ade was intriguing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally the landscapes of Malaysia will always remain a vivid memory in my mind. It<\/span><\/span>‘s<\/span><\/span> amazing to think that in <\/span><\/span>a relatively small area, such diverse environments exist<\/span><\/span>: t<\/span><\/span>he lush tea plantations<\/a> <\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the retreat of the British in the 19th Century<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the dense jungles of Taman Negara<\/a>, Langkawi\u2019s diverse <\/span><\/span>geopark<\/span><\/span> and the white sand beaches<\/a> of the east coast. It’s<\/span><\/span> a photographer\u2019s dr<\/span><\/span>eam.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, the whole experience had an incredible effect<\/span><\/span> on me. I knew I wanted to keep exploring for the rest of my life and decided to pursue a career in travel. <\/span><\/span>I\u2019m happy to say the childhood dream <\/span><\/span>ca<\/span><\/span>m<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span> true and now, working for Experience Travel Group, I\u2019m particularly excited about the launch of <\/span><\/span>P<\/span><\/span>eninsular Malaysia.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
