It&#8217;s\u00a0the stuff of dreams.<\/p>\n<p>I was in Quang Bing province, central Vietnam, visiting Howard and Debora, the Bradford couple who discovered this cavern. They now run an ecotourism venture called Oxalis that lead guided tours through the Son Doong cave as well as other local treks through the UNSESCO Heritage Site of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Having spent most of my time of my Vietnam trip with locals, hearing\u00a0a familiar\u00a0British accent on arrival took me by surprise.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lovely to meet you&#8221; said Debora.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I instantly felt at home.\u00a0I sat down with fellow visitors to listen to Howard&#8217;s talk about his story and the treks Oxalis runs through Son Doong and beyond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7166\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0197EDIT-e1449674101329.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7166\" class=\"wp-image-7166 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0197EDIT-1024x645.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0197EDIT\" width=\"800\" height=\"504\" data-id=\"7166\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Howard at Oxalis&#8217; hotel lounge area<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Howard&#8217;s journey is one of humble origins. He started trekking and caving in the north of England as a child at school and continued this as a hobby whilst working for the NHS in his adult life. When the chance came up to visit Vietnam and explore the caves in this region, he journeyed out and locals showed him the entrance to a large cavern, Howard entered and for the first time travelled\u00a0the extensive trail of Son Doong. All porters are locally employed and trained, guiding visitors through the various treks on offer. Fun, chatty and well-spirited, they set the tone for your experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We want to encourage others to come see this area of Vietnam. At a two-day, one-night trek, it&#8217;s not too much and certainly gives you a fantastic experience \u2013 you don&#8217;t have to do the full week long trek of Son Doong, the world&#8217;s biggest cave.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7425\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0215-e1452187670909.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7425\" class=\"wp-image-7425 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0215-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0215\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" data-id=\"7425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from hotel&#8217;s rooftop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The talk came to an end and I was invited upstairs to the rooftop of the Oxalis base camp. The views were spectacular over the river beyond, with little boats meandering down and a colonial catholic church across the other side of the valley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_1698-EDIT-e1449674690251.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_1698-EDIT-1024x733.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1698 EDIT\" width=\"800\" height=\"573\" data-id=\"7174\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coming downstairs to the picnic lounge area, some celebratory drinks, Vietnamese nibbles\u00a0and delicious carrot cake were on offer. When it was time to leave this beautiful place, my heart sank. Son Trach certainly came across as a paradise on earth and the experiences on offer are as unique as they are inspiring. I can only thoroughly recommend other travellers to consider visiting this unusual\u00a0area of Vietnam and try out the trekking and caving for themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0218-EDIT-e1449673037220.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.experiencetravelgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0218-EDIT-1024x770.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0218 EDIT\" width=\"800\" height=\"602\" data-id=\"7164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>The caving and jungle experiences fit well in-between visiting Hanoi and Halong Bay.
