Original Adventures in Java & Sumba

An idea for your holiday

This itinerary takes in three very different locations in Indonesia, each with truly outstanding natural beauty. The three parts of the tour will each afford you a different experience, from rejuvenating at a hillside retreat to luxuriating in beachside cabanas on a remote island to exploring ancient man-made wonders set against a backdrop of smouldering volcanos.

This itinerary includes the chance to see famous landmarks and the opportunity to get off the beaten track. It also allows for some serious adventures for those who dare.

Highlights include:

  • Ease into Indonesia with a short retreat in the coffee plantations of Java
  • Experience a stay at the incredible Nihi Sumba - an extraordinary privilege
  • Explore ancient Borobodur (and other mysterious temple relics) - the volcanic backdrop makes for a magical setting, and the photo opportunities are endless

Your holiday will include private transport and guides, allowing you flexibility and spontaneity. We believe our guides are some of the best and will bring your travel to life.

This is a sample itinerary which we will tailor to suit you. Prices are dependent on destination, flights & dates but ETG holidays always include the following:

  • International flights (if required)
  • Guides, drivers & their tips
  • Accommodation
  • Specified meals & snacks

Day 1 Fly to Java

Depart the UK on a flight to Yogyakarta

Day 2 - 4 Mesa Stila Central Java

After arrival at Yogyakarta airport, you'll transfer by road to Mesa Stila, a retreat on a working coffee plantation in a beautiful, peaceful setting in central Java. A perfect place to recover from jetlag and ease into your Indonesian holiday while enjoying luxury facilities and panoramic views of Java's otherworldy mountainous, landscape.

There is an emphasis on wellness at Mesa Stila so you'll be able to enjoy spa treatments and yoga if you would like. But it's a beautiful setting for a range of more energetic activities too, from trekking and cycling routes to a more leisurely guided morning walk around the surrounding coffee plantation.

Day 5 -7 Borobudur

Only in Java do ancient human-made wonders sit against a backdrop of smoking volcanoes jutting out of lush green plains, and this part of the holiday is all about experiencing this unique aspect of Indonesia.

You'll journey by car with your guide from Mesa Stila towards Borobodur stopping en route to explore the slopes of Mount Ungaran where you can ride by horseback to Gedong Songo, one of the most beautifully sited temples complexes in Asia. Continue towards Borobudur, the single largest Buddhist monument in the world. During your time at Borobudur, one of the highlights will undoubtedly be climbing to watch the sunrise or set through the stupas, while in the background, you can see a mountainous landscape stretch out before you.

During your stay, you will also have the chance to immerse yourself in Indonesian culture with a visit to the Javanese village of Candirejo where you'll get to experience the timeless traditions of Indonesia first-hand. You'll also have the chance to visit the Kraton (Royal Palace), and to explore the magnificent Prambanan Temple.

Day 8-12 Nihiwatu Resort, Sumba Island

You'll fly from Yogyakarta to Sumba via Bali.  Twice the size of Bali but with only a sixth of the population, Sumba is a beautiful island with untouched beaches and fantastic surf where many inhabitants still follow a quite traditional way of life. Nihiwatu is the ultimate get-away-from-the-crowd beach destination like nowhere else you will have been before.

The resort itself is unique, and barefoot-luxury style suites have been hand-built by local craftsmen around private pools and an idyllic sweeping bay. The location is a world-class surfing spot, and you can enjoy snorkelling, diving or paddle-boarding tours. Complimentary land-based activities include treks through the paddy-fields and adventures with the community; the local markets are a great place to get into Sumbanese life with exotic fruit, chilli's, peppers and the islands cherished betel nuts all piled high.

Day 13 Fly home via Bali

On your last day in Indonesia, you'll take the one hour flight from Sumba back to Bali where you'll board your flight home. Alternatively, we can arrange to extend your holiday with time in Bali.
