Eagles Crest, Knuckles Mt. Range

Sri Lanka, Kandy and Around

Known locally as Dumbara Kanduvetiya or the Misty Mountains, this range to the north of Kandy is remote, inaccessible and little troubled by modern life. It was said to be the site of an ancient battle between Rama and the King of Lanka, Ravana, featured in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, and the final hiding place of the last King of Kandy before the British unceremoniously killed him. There are mysterious ruins that have been lost in time throughout the area, and you can visit some of these sites. It's a region that the indigenous Sri Lankan 'Veddha' know well, but for the rest of us, the area holds its secrets tight in remote valleys and tight jungles.

People here are said to descend from those original inhabitants, mixing with the recent invaders (recent meaning over 2000 years ago!). Certainly, there is a rural way of life, as well as unique cultures, beliefs, and traditions preserved here in a way that is not so much in evidence in other parts of Sri Lanka.

The British colonisers prosaically christened the region 'the Knuckles', due to its resemblance to the knuckles on a fist. It is a complex landscape of peaks, valleys, and gorges rising over 6,000 feet above sea level. It was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1999. Thanks to the tropical climate and varying elevations, the area has five distinct microclimates and is home to many endemic and endangered species of flora and fauna. This breathtaking natural environment offers treks ranging from easygoing walks to epic multi-day adventures. It is an excellent addition to any trip to Sri Lanka.

Staying at Eagles Crest is to experience this, both in the lovely mountainous location as a base from which to explore and through the charming couple who host this lodge/cum homestay, Kusume and Sira, a local couple with four grown-up children who will look after you during your stay.

Tucked far into the region in central Sri Lanka, the Eagle's Crest is a comfy, cosy homestay offering a warm welcome and access to many scenic trekking routes. The accommodation is simple and rustic but charming, with a homely atmosphere, thoughtful touches, friendly hosts, and jaw-dropping views.

Along with providing access to these treks and the breathtaking scenery of Dumbara, the Eagles Crest Lodge also helps support the local community. The area's residents often live off the land or run small businesses. By staying at the lodge, visitors support not only the owners. This elderly couple has lived here for over 20 years, and there are also other local guides, farmers, taxi drivers, and other small businesses. The region currently only hosts around 1000 foreign tourists annually, meaning visitors are guaranteed a peaceful, private experience. However, their visit will have a significant positive impact on the community and the area.

To get the most out of a trip to Eagles Crest, we recommend staying for 2-3 nights. This means time not only for treks and exploration but also to relax, enjoy the slow pace of life in the hills, and take in the truly incredible scenery and nature. The whole trip is guided by our expert local guide who will bring the region alive and enable you to uncover its secrets slowly during your time at Eagles Crest. Your group will have the guide and Eagles Crest to yourself.

What you do and see will be bespoke to you - walking trails range from a few kilometres to highly strenuous all-day treks and everything in between. What you see and do is dependent on the time of year, the weather and simply what is going on in the local villages. Your guide will adapt the itinerary accordingly in discussion with you. What we can promise, though, is that you will experience a place and a way of life that is unique, special, and worth celebrating.

An incredibly special experience. A privilege.

Homestay - What we mean by 'Homestay' is generally a large family owned house, still occupied by at least some members of the family. Interaction with guests is encouraged and is in fact unlikely to be avoided! These places always have bags of character are usually highly charming and can provide a fascinating shortcut towards understanding local life a little better. Facilities can range from the luxurious, to pretty basic and meals are generally taken as a group and served in the local style rather than from a menu. The service is almost always fairly quirky and idiosyncratic. Great fun.
